Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
It has been another wet week for us here at Mt St John’s which has seen the children playing inside for most of the week. The children have done remarkably well considering how much energy they have saved up. Where possible, we have been playing in the COLA (covered outdoor learning area) using mini-trampolines, soft balls and skipping. Hopefully we get to be out in the playground again next week.
We have been working with our Years 3 - 6 students to learn about our expectations in the yard. We have had a renewed focus on using kind words and have been teaching students to ‘talk to please, not to tease.’ There has been a noticeable difference in positive interactions when students get this right. During one role play of this skill you could see smiles all round from the children involved.
Next week we move into Lent. We will have a liturgy on Wednesday to celebrate Ash Wednesday. This is a time where we turn back to God through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. For children this could mean focusing on how they treat others during this time to ensure that their interactions are all positive. It is a time of reflection and it marks 40 days until Easter. Our fundraising, or almsgiving, will focus on raising money for Caritas. Money raised from Shrove Tuesday will go towards Caritas.

We are committed to work alongside the most vulnerable, and to address the imbalance of power by including the people affected in the decisions impacting their lives.

Cooper H - for settling in to Mt St John's easily and making a great contribution to Stage 2!

Abbi M - for being able to use trial and error strategies when investigating shapes with symmetry.
Term 1 Swimming Program
Our Term 1 swimming program has commenced for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Swimming is a compulsory part of the PDHPE curriculum.
Students will need to bring swimmers, a towel, goggles, caps (the school can provide swimming caps for those students who don't own one), and sun shirts to school each Thursday for their lesson. There is no extra cost for swimming lessons, as the school covers the pool entry fees and payments to the swim teachers.
Swimming lessons will take place each Thursday in Term 1 (weather permitting) at the following times:
Stage 3 at 1pm
Stage 2 at 1.40pm
K - 2 at 2.20pm
Students will walk to and from the pool. Please note, K - 2 students are to be collected from the pool at the end of the day each Thursday as their lesson will finish at 3:05pm. Due to Covid regulations Tracey has asked that parents pick their children up from outside the pool. K - 2 students catching buses will do so from Dorrigo Public School, supervised by our staff.

Stage 1 Science
Stage 1 have been learning about 'mixtures' in science. We made three different mixtures and then observed them closely with magnifying glasses. We then recorded our results and observations in our science books. Great teamwork and great fun!

Term 3 school fees are payable by Friday 18th March, unless you are paying by regular direct deposit into the school's account. If you feel you will be unable to make payment by this date, please contact Cathy at the school and we can discuss alternative payment methods.

Road Safety Newsletter
Families can help keep children safe by:
- Sticking to the speed limit and following the road rules in school zones
- Slowing down to 40km/h when bus lights are flashing
- Looking out for children crossing the road near bus stops, in school zones or along bus routes
- Giving way to buses when they merge back into traffic.
- Never drop off or meet children on the opposite side of the road to the bus stop or call them across the road. Always drop them off or meet them on the same side of the road as the bus stop.
- Encouraging their children to be distraction-free around buses - put down their phone and take off their headphones.

Library Day - Wednesday
Library day for all students is Wednesday - please make sure your child brings in his or her cloth library bag on this day. Each student may borrow four books per week.

School Drive Subsidy
The School Drive Subsidy is available for eligible school students where there is no public transport available for all or part of the journey. If you have to drive your child more than 1.6km to a school bus stop, you may be eligible for this subsidy – go to the link below to apply.
GLUE & Messy Church
GLUE "God Loves Us Eternally" (formerly GFS) restarts on Wednesday 23rd February. It will be held each Wednesday from 3-5pm at the Anglican Hall. Afternoon tea, games, fun worship and craft. All primary kids welcome, as are newcomers. For more info, ring Gwenneth on 6657 2135. COVID-safe practices will apply.
Messy Church 2022 - the first Messy Church of the year (titled 'Messy Miracles') will be held on Sunday 20th March from 4-6pm in the Anglican Hall. All families and children are welcome.
Instrumental Music With Hazel
Hazel Buchanan is offering individual music lessons on Friday afternoons at school again this year, and currently has a couple of spaces. Hazel teaches woodwind, brass and piano. For more details, please call Hazel on 0458 572525.
Guitar Lessons
